Overview

How much does a business website cost?

Send the same brief to five web builders and you'll get five very different prices. Nobody has to be ripping you off. One is quoting for design only, another includes copy, photos and testing. Once you know what you're paying for, comparing quotes takes a few minutes.

In short

  • The price depends on the amount of work, not the number of pages.
  • After launch you pay for the domain, hosting and maintenance. Ask about them up front.
  • A good quote has a breakdown. One number with no explanation is a warning sign.

What you are actually paying for

Break the quotes down and you'll find the same items almost every time. What differs is how many of them the builder does for you:

  • Structure. Which pages there will be, what goes on them and where people should click.
  • Design. An adjusted template, or a design made for your brand.
  • Copy and photos. This is where budgets are most often underestimated.
  • Features. A contact form is cheap. Bookings, a shop or a link to your accounting software are not.
  • Launch. Domain, hosting, basic SEO, analytics and testing on phones.

A cheap quote usually assumes you'll handle the copy, photos and part of the setup yourself. That can be fine. It's just good to know before you sign.

Small, medium, or with features

A tradesperson or a small practice usually needs a simple presentation site. Home page, services, a few words about you and contact details. It's the cheapest option and for a lot of businesses it's the right one.

A company site with more services, references, a price list and articles costs more. Not because of the technology, but because there's more content that someone has to prepare and check.

The most expensive sites are the ones that do something: bookings, a client area, a shop. That means real programming and a lot of testing. On the market, prices run from a few hundred euros for a filled-in template to tens of thousands for large custom sites.

Costs after launch

This is what people forget most often. Once it's live, a website needs a domain and hosting, both paid every year (see domain and hosting). If it runs on a content management system, it also needs regular updates. Then come the small things: a new price list, different opening hours, a summer offer.

So ask the builder straight away how much the first change after launch will cost. The answer tells you a lot about the quote. If you don't want to deal with any of this, look at a website on a subscription.

Where to save without it showing

Preparation saves the most. When your notes, photos and list of services are ready, the work goes faster (our content checklist helps). Second tip: start smaller. Five good pages can go live now and more can follow later.

Frequently asked questions

Why do website quotes differ so much?

Every builder quotes for a different scope. One delivers design only, another adds copy, photos, SEO and testing. Compare the breakdown, not the final number.

How much does it cost to run a website for a year?

It depends on the site. Always count on the domain and hosting, and updates if it runs on a content management system. A decent quote tells you these costs in advance.

Can I pay for a website over time?

Yes. Many builders, us included, offer a subscription. You pay monthly and hosting and maintenance are included.
