One-off payment or subscription?
You used to just buy a website. You paid, you got it, and then a nephew looked after it, or nobody did. Today more and more businesses subscribe instead: they pay monthly and the builder takes care of hosting, backups and small changes. Both make sense, just for different people.
In short
- Paying once works if you have the budget and someone to look after the site.
- A subscription is for people who don't want to deal with the technical side.

Buy it once
You pay for the build and the site is yours. This suits you if you have money to invest, won't change the site much and know who will keep an eye on it.
After launch, though, you pay for hosting and the domain separately, and every change is a new order. Sites on a content management system also need updates. If nobody does them, the site ages within a few years and can become an easy target for attacks.
Pay monthly
There's no big payment at the start. The monthly fee usually covers the build, hosting, domain, security, backups and small changes. You don't have to watch over anything and the site keeps working.
Over several years you'll pay more than if you had bought it. But that includes a service you would otherwise pay for separately or do yourself.
Side by side
| One-off | Subscription | |
|---|---|---|
| At the start | higher amount | low |
| Hosting and domain | your job | included |
| Updates, backups | extra | included |
| Small changes | each one extra | usually included |
| Who owns the site | you | depends on the contract |
Before you sign a subscription
Ask mainly about this. Whose name is the domain registered in? (It should always be yours.) What happens to the site if you cancel? Which changes are included and what do the others cost? And how long are you tied in?

Frequently asked questions
Do I own a website on a subscription?
The domain, always. For the site itself the contract decides, so ask whether you get it when you cancel and on what terms.
Is a subscription worth it for a small business?
Often, yes. You don't pay a large sum at once and you don't have to deal with hosting, updates or backups.
