What a business website needs

People don't visit your website to find out when you were founded. They want to know whether you can help them, what it costs and how to reach you. Go through your site with the list below. It takes ten minutes.

Content

  • A home page that makes clear what you do, for whom and where.
  • Services or products with a short description. Ideally with a price, at least "from".
  • Something people will believe: reviews, references, photos of real people and places.
  • Contact details in plain sight. On a phone, people must be able to call you with one tap.
  • A clear next step: call, write, book, ask for a quote.

Technical basics

  • It works on a phone, not just on a computer.
  • The home page appears within a few seconds even on mobile data. You can check this for free with Google PageSpeed Insights.
  • The address starts with https://.
  • Every page has its own title and description for search engines.
  • You know how many people visit and where they come from.

Required details and cookies

Your company name, registered address and company ID must be on the site. If you collect data through a form or measure traffic, you also need a privacy notice.

For cookies, the rule in the EU is simple. You can use strictly necessary cookies without asking. Everything else, typically analytics and advertising, needs consent first. Hence the cookie banner, where visitors must also be able to say no.

Frequently asked questions

Does every website need a cookie banner?

Only if it uses cookies that aren't strictly necessary. Typically analytics or advertising.

How many pages should a business website have?

As many as your customers need. For a small business, home, services, about and contact are often enough.
